SOUTH AFRICA - A RAINBOW NATION

Did you know that South Africa is also called 'A Rainbow Nation', that it has eleven official languages and three capital cities? Well, most of us are not aware of all these. However a text in our student's book gave us the opportunity to learn more information about South Africa and its history.

This text gave us the chance to talk about slavery and human rights since it referred to the 17th century when first settlers from Holland and then from Britain came to this place and treated the native people as slaves. We discussed and analyzed the fact that people were separated, that black children went to different schools and were made to stay in specific regions. Of course, this was just the beginning, since the students were motivated to talk about human rights today and to what extent they are respected in a community.
