Can science help to sustain peace in the world? Are all the scientific achievements used for the promotion of peace?
Our sixth graders were asked similar questions and were given a short essay to consider. Later they were asked about their opinion on this controversial matter and a 'creative' debate in the class started. The students were quite thoughtful on this topic, since there is not always a clear answer. They mentioned examples and used their persuasion skills in order to support their point of view. What everyone finally admitted was that science helps and promotes world peace only if its achievements are used in moderation and for everyone's benefit.
What is true, is that the students really enjoyed the debate, since they practised their English language and they felt as if they were young 'politicians'.
